AT T Preps Motorola Atrix Release

AT&T Technology
AT&T plans to start taking preorders Feb. 13 for the Motorola Atrix 4G, a smartphone with enough power to drive a laptop dock with a full screen and keyboard. Toss in another $300 and the carrier will sell you the Motorola dock, too.

The smartphone runs Android version 2.2, called Froyo, and offers motorolas motoblur a contact and social networking service. Combining a smartphone with a laptop dock reflects the growing power of the mobile devices, which could eventually become a viable alternative to low-end laptops.

It just might work: A super-powered Android phone that inserts like a game cartridge into a laptop, providing the CPU and the connectivity. What makes this price feel high is that rumors suggested the phone and laptop would each cost $149. AT&T will charge $199 for the phone, and charge an a la carte price of $499 for the laptop dock by itself. (Its basically the current $25 2GB data plan plus the $20 tethering fee, but now, when you get tethering, you get up to 4GB of data usage.)

Along with this, the wireless service provider will commence pre-sales for Motorola Atrix 4G on February 13. For a complete user experience, the device will be complemented by breakthrough accessories that comprise a super-thin Motorola Laptop Dock and the Motorola HD Multimedia Dock.

The latter one benefits from the smartphone’s HDMI video output capabilities and processing power to enable an unprecedented browsing, application and media experience. The Atrix 4G will further integrate AT&T Mobile Hotspot service which should enable users to connect additional Wi-Fi-enabled devices.
